From Stranger to Neighbor
Long before the first European settlers arrived, the land surrounding modern-day Grand Rapids belonged to Indigenous peoples. For thousands of years, Native American communities lived along the Grand River, which stretches nearly 260 miles across Michigan. The river served as a vital transportation route and source of food. The rapids that once flowedhrough the center of present-day Grand Rapids gave the city its name.
The area was home primarily to the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi peoples, collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy. These communities hunted, fished, traded, and cultivated the land long before any city existed.
The Grand River itself became the lifeline of the region. Canoes moved goods and people through dense forests. Villages flourished along its banks. Trade networks connected communities throughout the Great Lakes.
To understand Grand Rapids, one must first understand that the city's story did not begin with settlers. It began with Indigenous peoples whose relationship with the land stretched back thousands of years...
